Coronation Grade 5 Gifted

November Classroom Updates

November 30, 2010

Yesterday we worked on our newspaper article. The non-mandatory outline website can be found at the following link: http://interactives.mped.org/view_interactive.aspx?id=110&title=

Today we had an assembly where all the male teachers had their moustaches shaved off. The hair stylists who came in to shave our faces donated a very generous and unexpected $500 to the cause! I assigned a math brochure that will be the summative evaluation for our data management unit. Students had time today to work on their newspaper article, and I also handed out a reading all about some gross experiments that are related to the human digestive system. Sick!

What a busy week! On Wednesday, we started to look at the questions for a reading assessment called CASI. The students took a look at an article about digestion and we wrote a A+ response together on the computer. We also put colour backing on the art project we did with Mr. Nickerson. All the art is displayed outside of our classroom and I have had multiple teachers compliment the students on their art. Well done, guys! If you are picking up your child from the school one day, come down and see the great work on display. We have been working on mean, median and mode for our math unit. Finally, we had our weekly Cougar Roar. Each week, a student is chosen from the class who has done exceptional work. They are sent to the office to call home and to explain what positive things they did in class. Congratulations to RW for receiving this week's Cougar Roar.

On Thursday, we had our Respect Assembly. Congratulations to the students (KC, MS, MM) who got a Cougar Award. The female teachers in the school had a special Movember presentation for the students. All the female teachers wore fake moustaches to support the men that have donated their face to the cause! The month of November has been dedicated to supporting men with prostate cancer. Men across the world have grown moustaches in support of this worthy cause. As a school, we have been supporting Movember by painting moustaches on the students and by having all the male teachers grow moustaches for the month. We have raised money as a school which we will be donating to medical research and treatment.

On Friday, we worked in groups to write reponses to the digestion article. Everyone went around the graded each others work and we calculated the average of all those grades. Today I assigned a newspaper article assignment that the students have begun to work on. They are expected to have a rough draft completed for Monday when we have a computer period to work on the assignment. We are also working on our models of the human body with "Bonesy", our cut-out skeleton friend. Today we started to draw and paste on our digestive system. The results will look great! I also assigned a math homework sheet that deals with calculating mean and mode.

I have heard that many students and their families have been checking the website this week! I'm glad to hear it. I will be changing the website some more in the coming weeks so stayed tuned for changes. Have a great weekend!

Today we worked on our Communicating Skills booklet and we read some of our book, Shattered. We talked about 'value' and I used a $5 bill as a vivid example. Ask your child about it. We also did two fun science experiments in the afternoon- thanks to those who brought in 2L pop bottles. We tested our lung's capacity with balloons and we also created lungs out of pop bottles. Congratulations to all the students on completing the beep test in gym!

Thanks to all the parents who came in for parent teacher interviews. If you were not able to see me, please put a note in your child's agenda if you would like to schedule a meeting. Today we did a geometric art project with Ms. Nickerson. We also wrote thank you cards to Mr. Beales, who visited our class on Thursday. We worked with the Smartboard, continuing our science unit on the human body. ****I have sent home many forms today, please make sure you get them. Thank you!******

See you all at the parent teacher interviews!

November 16, 2010

Today we made our word wall for our science unit and we began an art project that is looking at shading and tinting. We are having a math quiz tomorrow on data management.

November 15, 2010

Today, we worked on our analysis of a Veteran's Day newspaper. Mrs. Diosi came in and discussed new books in our library. She also discussed a reading program that many of the students are interested in joining. We also prepared for our math quiz on Wednesday. We continued our discussion of the human body with a video on the lungs and the respiratory system. On Friday, we did a great science experiment with water that replicated the amount of work that the human heart has to do. Ask your child about the experiment- the students really enjoyed it! We also took our resting heart rate and our heart rate after exercising (specifically, chasing Mr. Raiken around the school yard).

Please note, am I am interested in conducting a few experiments that need empty 2L plastic pop containers. If you have any at home, please send them with your child to school. Thank you!

Today we had our Remembrance Day Assembly in the gymnasium. What a great collection of presentations! Everyone was very respectful. Thank you to all the parents and neighbours who attended. We started our investigation of the human heart at the website http://kidshealth.org/kid/ this website contains many great links about the human body. We read Shattered today and the students also worked on their Mid-Chapter Review for mathematics.

November 10, 2010

Today we read some more of our novel, Shattered. We visited our buddies and helped them write their letters to Santa Claus. We dug a little deeper into our data management unit (we are about halfway through). We studied pictograms to go along with our knowledge of bar graphs, circle graphs and broken line graphs. We ended the day with another DPA presentation. I have handed back the interview times for the students that brought in the form- please check the time and date.

November 9, 2010

What a busy day! Today we graded a class summary that we had come up with on an article we have been reading for awhile. The students gave themselves generally a B or a C level, so it was interesting to note how they graded their own work. We also did some graphing for our math unit in Data Management related to our summaries. We took a look at some fun websites on the skeleton online and we all learned some very interesting facts about our bodies. Have your child tell you about some of the things we learned! We are about halfway through our data management math unit. We ended our day with some fun drama games which the students enjoyed. Try the game 'Alphabet Argument' at home- it is more dificult than you would think!

November 1, 2010

Today we took another look at our Nanotechnology paper, we read some more of our novel (Shattered), had some DPA presentations and we played some drama games. I handed out a large amount of marked work, so please talk to your child about the work that came home today.
