Today we had our number sense and numeration math test. At lunch time, I had some great helpers who set up the room for our art projects in the afternoon. We had our Halloween Walk as well- thanks to all the parents and neighbours who showed up to see all of us in our costumes. We painted our pumpkins this afternoon and the students enjoyed some activities in Mrs. Foster-Knight's class. Congratulations to all the students who finished all their work for the end of the week.
October 28, 2010

Today we had our Character Awards Assembly in the gym. Congratulations to the students who were recognized for showing the trait of responsiblity this month. We also worked on a sheet for Shattered and we had our Elections presentations. What an amazing afternoon! The students put in so much work and they were very excited to present. I was very impressed and so was Mr. Schlieffer. Reminders:
-Bring in a small pumpkin for tomorrow
-Students must finish any work that is not completed in order to participate in the halloween activities
-We have a math test tomorrow

October 27, 2010

Today we read some more of our novel, Shattered. Thank you to my helpers who checked to see if students had completed all of their assignments! Congratulations to the students who got a "You're the man!" or a "You're the woman!" sticky note for having all of their work completed up to this date. Students are aware that they will not be able to participate in the halloween activities if they do not complete all of their work. We had two great DPA presentations today and we took up the answers to the math booklets. Please take a look at the results of the homework check- this will not be for marks, but it is a way for the students to know where they are in relation to the upcoming test.

October 26, 2010

Thanks to R. for posting our homework! Also, thanks to L. and S. for cleaning our blackboard. I am very grateful to have such a helpful class. Today we finished up our "what did you do this week" presentations, we worked on summarizing an article all about nano-medicine (which will tie into our upcoming human body science unit), and we listened to Mr. Schlieffer's Grade 5s present their elections project. The students were very excited to listen to their classmates and plenty of campaign stickers and pamphlets were shown. I also gave out a math booklet that summarizes many of the key skills that the students should know for their unit test on Friday. Please take a look at this and make sure your child understands the concepts for their upcoming test. We also began our DPA presentations with two great presentations to start us off. Also, as a reminder, please return the parent signature sheet from the IEP. The copy we sent home is for you to file at home. I will be sending students home with any IEPs that were returned to me, minus the third page.

October 25, 2010

Today in class we had our presentations of our "what did you do this week?" art projects. We have some very creative students in the class! I introduced a healthy eating summative evaluation for our health unit that is due on Friday. Please speak to your child about this as it might take a bit of planning. We missed our DPA presentations for today so they will be re-scheduled. I also announced our math unit test for Friday. On Friday afternoon, we are having our class party and school-wide parade. Please bring in a small pumpkin to be painted on Friday! These are available at most grocery stores. Also, I want to post a reminder of our Character Awards Assembly happening on Thursday at 10am. If your child is receiving an award, you are welcome to attend.

October 20, 2010

IEPs were sent home today with each student- please make sure you get them! The Social Studies quiz is tomorrow, please make sure your child is prepared.
Students should be collecting items for their "what I did this week" art assignment. Our plans for halloween were discussed today during the day and during our First Rate problem solving session with Ms. Foster-Knight's class. The students are very excited and they shared some great ideas! Students are welcome to come to the halloween events so long as their behaviour has been appropriate and any outstanding work is completed.

October 18, 2010

Students were given their 'what did you do this week?' art project. Please take a look at the assignment at home. It is due Monday, October 25, 2010.

October 15, 2010

Please see the new "homework" tab above. We finished our Reader's Theatre scripts today and we visited our reading buddies in Mrs. Capson's class.

October 14, 2010

Today we had some of our Reader's Theatre presentations, we worked on the social studies summative project and we did some more of our math unit.

THE SOCIAL STUDIES QUIZ IS ON THURSDAY OF NEXT WEEK! The students should have the following sheets: "Systems of Government", "The Federal Level of Government", "The Charter of Rights and Freedoms" and "All about Elections"

Students should be working on, or finished, their "proud to be a Canadian" essay that is due tomorrow.

October 13, 2010

Most students completed their rough copies of their Proud to be a Canadian paper. Please check with your child to make sure they showed it to me.

Today we made summarizing "foldables"- a graphic organizer that will help the students to organize a written summary of a long text.

We looked at some fun math websites, which are listed below- try them at home!

Rounding: Remember the board game Concentration? This game is the same, only you are matching numbers to their rounded pairs. http://www.quia.com/cc/293.html

Fire the Tank! In this game you control a tank that only fires when you get the answer right! There are three levels, and the third is timed... bombs away!http://www.toonuniversity.com/flash.asp?err=503&engine=15

Math Jeopardy: Go head to head with a partner testing your math skills. These questions are addition, subtraction, division, multiplication and rounding.

Rounding BBC Game: This game has two funny hosts with some silly sound effects! You have to round whole numbers and decimal numbers as well, so this might be challenging!

REMINDER: The rough copy (graphic organizer plus a rough copy that has been edited by someone else) is due on Wednesday. The good copy is due on Friday.

Reader's Theatre presentations will be on Thursday.

Students were given their summative assignment for our government unit. Each student has the assignment sheet, please take a look at it with your child. Due date TBA.

Students finished up their halloween art and it will be displayed all around our classroom.

October 08, 2010

HAPPY THANKSGIVING! SEE YOU ON TUESDAY

The good copy of the "Proud to be Canadian" paper is due on Friday of next week.

There will be a Social Studies test in two weeks (date TBA).

Today the students worked on some Halloween Art with Mrs. Diosi.

I have mailed in the September Scholastic orders and the order forms I received for October. When sending in the order forms, please do not join two orders from two different months in one money order. This makes the order difficult to process. I will take in any more October forms up until the end of this month.

Classroom News
We have been having some great discussions about voting, rights and freedoms and styles of government. Many of the students have interesting opinions and ideas on the issues, so I welcome you to ask them about what their thoughts are! Today we talked about voting and whether everyone in Canada should have the right to vote. This discussion was sparked by some of the interview answers from the Social Studies homework, so thank you for participating!

LanguageOral Communication
We have been working on our Reader's Theater Scripts. The students have been enjoying this activity immensely. I am looking forward to their presentations! We have also been listening to a 1940s Superman radio serial, recordings of this can be found at: www.oldtimeradiofans.com.
Reading
We are reading the novel Shattered, by Eric Walters. The novel deals with our big idea of Citizenship, which ties into our Social Studies unit.
Writing
The students are to write a paper discussing the title, "Why I am proud to live in Canada". This assignment is being marked on the writing trait of "Ideas". Having a focused topic, choosing strong supporting details and not straying from the main idea is the key to this assignment. Each student has an assignment sheet, a graphic organizer and a rubric. The rough copy (peer edited) and graphic organizer is due Wednesday, October 13, 2010.

Math
We recently completed our Patterning Unit. Your child should be coming home with their unit test on Thursday, October 7th. Please sign the top of the test. We are beginning our Numeracy unit, which is looking at place value, digits up to 10 000, ordering numbers, rounding numbers, decimal hundredths and comparing decimals. Students typically have a difficult time with decimal numbers, so I encourage you to follow along with their homework and assignments.

Social Studies
We have been learning about the Canadian government, the voting process and different forms of government. Your child may have interviewed you recently about your voting experience. Earlier, the students attempted to answer questions that are modeled after the Canadian Immigration Test. Try some questions at home!

Health:We are currently discussing healthy eating in our health unit. The students will soon be given a healthy eating assignment that will encourage them to critically look at the food they are eating.
