A short, memorable video about the need to care for our planet- before it's too late!

Travis

Travis is a band from the U.K. They rose to fame in the late 1990s and were much bigger overseas than they were in Canada. They were a key influence in Coldplay's sound- listen for the similarities. This is a song we looked at in class, using it as an example of a metaphor. If you like this song, you may also like "Sing"- posted below. Watch the video for "Sing"... it features the biggest food fight I've ever seen!

Joni Mitchell

Joni Mitchell is a singer-songwriter born in Alberta who was most famous in the 1970s. As I described to the class, she was the Lady Gaga of her generation: a female artist who was both highly respected and controversial. Her ability to sing personal, touching songs put her at the top of popular music at the time. Her influence is still felt today, as her songs are sung by current popular artists- she wrote "Big Yellow Taxi" which is posted below. Below "Yellow Taxi" is a song called "River". In this song, she sings about living in California for her music, but wishing she was back in cold Canada for Christmas. At 2 minutes and 20 seconds, she sing the line "I would teach my feet to fly". When she sings "fly", she uses a musical technique called a melisma, where she sings many different notes using the same word- listen for it, it's beautiful. She is still alive and is producing both music and art.

Sarah Harmer

Sarah Harmer is a singer-songwriter born in Kingston, Ontario. She is a strong advocate for saving the environment, specifically the Niagara Escarpment. While we studied "Lodestar" (my personal favourite), her biggest radio hit was "Basement Apartment", posted below. In that song, she sings about visiting a friend in a basement apartment and what her experiences are like there. Below that song is "Escarpment Blues", which she wrote to convince people to save the Niagara Escarpment. She currently tours and is promoting her recent album Oh Little Fire.
